TECHNICAL INFORMATION
COLLAGES AND INDIVIDUAL PRINTS
The
earlier images were shot as 35 mm transparencies, on mainly Fuji Velvia, using
Canon cameras. More recent pictures are taken with Canon digital cameras, one a
10 D, the other a Digital Rebel. We use a variety of Canon lenses, from 17 mm
wide to 400 mm telephoto, including a 180 mm macro. The transparencies were
scanned with a Nikon Coolpix 4000 ED slide and film scanner at a resolution of
4000 dpi; the digital photos are all shot as raw files with a resolution of
3072 by 2048. The collages themselves are assembled using Adobe Photoshop 7.0
or CS. Each individual photo within the collage is a PDF file of 1800 by 1200
pixels; photos available as original prints are typically from substantially
larger size files. The largest of the collages, entitled "What Color is the
Desert" is a nine- by-nine photo grid, yielding a total print size of 16,200 by
10,800 pixels. Using a resolution of 300 pixels per inch allows for print sizes
up to 54 by 36 inches. The 36-image collages are each sized at 10,800 by 7,200
pixels, allowing for a print of up to 36 by 24 inches at a 300 dpi resolution.
The 16-image collages that are coming soon to the site are each 7200 by 4800
pixels; using Genuine Fractals print software, prints of 20 by 30 are produced
without visible loss of picture quality. Smaller prints are easily produced by
simply adjusting the resolution upwards.
PRINTERS AND PAPER CHOICES
Each
custom collage or individual photo of 13 by 19 inches or smaller is printed on
Epson 2200, 7600 or 9600 photo inkjet printer using ultrachrome inks for
archival print life; standard prints in this size range are available in
glossy, semi-glossy, and matte finishes. Larger sizes of standard collages and
photos are printed on Epson 7600 or 9600 printers, once again using ultrachrome
inks, and are offered in your choice of Epson glossy, luster, or enhanced matte
paper. Deluxe limited-edition prints, numbered and signed on a separate
certificate of authenticuty, may be ordered on either Fuji Crystal Archive
Supergloss or fine art paper, either Somerset Photo Enhanced Velvet or Epson
Velvet Fine Art paper, depending upon print size; both of the fine art papers
are very similar to each other, and produce gorgeous, well-saturated prints; I
personally generally prefer images printed on this particular paper; my wife
tends to prefer the Fuji Crystal Archive Superglossy which displays a wide
gamut and deep blacks. But,clearly, it you want the finest print quality, you
should select a limited-edition print on either one of these fine papers.
